South of Market Child Care, Inc. (SOMACC) is the only 501(c)3 organization bringing high quality early care and education and family support services to children and families from diverse financial situations in the South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood and surrounding communities. Each year, SOMACC maintains an enrollment of at least 60% from low-income households and families in need of financial support in order to have uninterrupted access to exceptional early education services for their children.

However, the continuous budget cuts to California’s child care and development programs result to less funding for agencies like SOMACC, thus threatening to hamper our ability to provide services, especially to disadvantaged families. The monthly tuition fees of private families and funding from the state, city and private foundations only cover a portion of the cost it takes to care and educate the future pillars of our society. With fewer operational dollars, it makes it really challenging for us to keep classrooms stocked with materials, purchase supplies and equipment, offer field trips and other enrichment activities to the children, and provide competitive salaries needed to hire and retain well-qualified teachers.
